Ottawa looks to (gasp!) Portland, Copenhagen, Montreal…

Heading into Ottawa along the Capital Pathway

Ottawa has a lot going for it.  Friendly people, lovely summers, and more pleated khaki pants than you could ever hope to encounter.  It’s also a great place to cycle, particularly during those summers and while surrounded by those people (despite their pants).  But Ottawa wants to improve, especially after an awful accident this summer raised questions about cycling infrastructure and safety.  At a recent meeting to discuss how best to integrate bicycles into the transportation network, government officials and advocacy groups looked to the cycling utopias of Copenhagen and Portland, with the upstart Montreal getting a mention as well.

For what it’s worth, Ottawa is the best Canadian city I’ve cycled in.  Plus, it has Di Rienzo’s.  Best. Sandwiches. Ever.
