Tax the Cyclists? WE ALREADY PAY TAX!

Paid for by cyclists, too.

Paid for by cyclists, too.

A common complaint against cyclists’ demands for road space is that cyclists don’t pay taxes on things like cars or gas, and therefore haven’t paid their share of street construction and maintenance costs.  I’ve always found this argument ridiculous because it assumes that cyclists don’t own or operate cars.  Well, a recent survey performed by a research firm in…wait for it…PORTLAND indicates that 90% of “avid” cyclists in Oregon have indeed purchased cars and even fill those cars with precious fuel.

If those are the stats in Oregon and Washington State, just imagine what the numbers are in regions not considered cycling utopias.  File this one under “stick that in your pipe and smoke it.”
